Hub Motor vs Mid-Drive Motor Assembly Lines for E-Bikes

Honest| 2026-05-11|Return

Hub motor winding is relatively straightforward, while mid-drive motors present greater technical challenges, particularly in winding and magnet assembly. Honest Automation now offers complete mass-production solutions for both hub motors and mid-drive motors, helping manufacturers efficiently scale up their e-bike motor production.

Let’s first explore the pros and cons of these two types of motors, and then look at the differences in their equipment.

Pros and Cons of E-Bike Hub Motors vs Mid-Drive Motors

Hub Motors (Front or Rear Drive) are mainly used in commuter bikes and lower-priced bicycles due to their lower cost, with motor retail prices ranging from 44-118 USD.

Advantages:

· Simple design and structure, low cost, low noise, stable, reliable, and easy to maintain.

1. When designing a new bike or DIY project, only the wheelset needs to be remade.

2. Motor manufacturers provide the motor and control buttons, making them compatible with most bicycles.

3. Manufacturers only need to slightly adjust the battery mounting on the frame to assemble commuter e-bikes.

4. Belt drives can be used, which are more suitable for urban commuting than chains, easier to maintain, and avoid chain oil staining clothing.

Disadvantages:

· Weight is concentrated in the front or rear wheel, resulting in poorer balance. Larger power output requires a larger motor.

1. Cannot achieve the flexible handling required for professional sports bicycles.

2. It is difficult to replace the wheelset with other brands (e.g., for aerodynamics, rigidity, or lightweight designs).

3. Cannot be easily combined with other components without affecting the original specifications of high-end sports bike parts.

4. Rear hub motors are limited by structural constraints and cannot accommodate cassettes with more than 10 speeds.

Working Principle of Hub Motors:

Hub motors operate based on magnetic induction. The outer ring acts as the stator with coils, while the inner ring is the rotor with permanent magnets. There are no friction parts between them, and the rotor directly drives the wheel, resulting in high direct-drive efficiency.

Mid-Drive Motors are located at the bottom bracket of the bike frame and are typically used in sport bicycles, though some high-end commuter bikes also adopt them. The motor retail price ranges from $294–$441 USD.

Advantages:

· Centralized weight, better balance and handling, stable performance, and suitable for competitive riding.

1. In the sports component market, other branded sports components are not affected by the mid-drive motor.

2. High- to mid-end sport wheelsets, cranks, electronic shifting systems, and cassettes remain compatible with the original bike.

3. Only the bottom bracket area and battery compartment of the frame are modified.

4. Fully compatible with cassettes and chains of various speeds, providing a wide range of applications.

Disadvantages:

· Complex internal structure, including the motor, electronic control system, and associated mechanical gear assembly.

1. The complexity results in a higher price.

2. Reliability is lower than hub motors, and maintenance costs are higher.

3. Cannot be applied to existing bike frames without redesigning the bottom bracket structure, and installation is more complicated.

4. Higher energy consumption compared to hub motors.

Working Principle of Mid-Drive Motors:

A mid-drive motor directly drives the bike’s bottom bracket and requires a clutch. When the bike is idling, the crank does not rotate. The motor works in coordination with the drive shaft, differential, and other components to transmit power to the chainring, assisting the rider’s pedaling.

More advanced mid-drive motors use an internal gear combination mechanism. Inside the motor housing, multiple clutch gears form a variable-speed ratchet system, increasing output torque and providing higher power for climbing and heavy loads. Additionally, the torque sensor is more sensitive, detecting variations in the rider’s pedaling force and directly acting on the bottom bracket, allowing for quicker acceleration.
